Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the types of payment instruments and the benefits and challenges for SMEs in accepting electronic payments. The article provides a general description of the payment instruments and their types, the card payment mechanism, and its participants, as well as the innovative technologies for card payments. It specifies the main benefits and obstacles to the wider penetration and use of electronic payment instruments by SMEs in Bulgaria. The trends in the development of electronic payments and their significance for the competitiveness of SMEs are shown.
