The Phenomenon of Sexual Violence against People with Intellectual Disabilities. A Review of Research

Summary/Abstract: Sexual violence against people with intellectual disabilities is a serious problem, because despite the widespread change in attitudes to disability, there is no visible reduction in the phenomenon, but the forms of violence and the place where crimes are committed are changing. During the functioning of the social integration and community care model, paradoxically, the cause of undesirable events is the increasing isolation and dependence of charges on caregivers and aid providers. The victims of sexual violence are most often women and young girls with intellectual disabilities, but research shows an increase in violence also against men. The paper discusses the problem of sexual violence in the context of social theories and models interpreting intellectual disability.
