Summary/Abstract: This article explores the phenomenon of the researcher’s displacement in the academicfield, situated within the context of social circulation of knowledge, both within theinstitutionalized world of science and between the academic, cultural, and artisticinstitutions engaged in popularizing scientific knowledge at various levels: expert, review, curatorial, research, and artistic. The case study will focus on academic displacementbetween philological and cultural studies, as well as between text-centric literary studiesand the extra-textual (or contextual) orientation of sound studies, viewed as a form ofsearching for what is non-logocentric but endowed with meaning and sense-makingpotential – such as sound, medium, or technology – even as a point of resistance againstdiscourses of domination or the domination of discourse. To describe this process andits experience, the author employs tools of critical autoethnography and anthropologicalcategories of “being-out-of-place” and “deep play” as operational concepts defining thecirculation of academic knowledge.
