Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to present selected aspects of family functioning after giving birth to a child with Down syndrome Material and methods: We used our own questionnaire and covered parents of children with Down syndrome in closed social media groups. We selected 161 online filled questionnaires for the statistical analysis. Results: Most parents in the surveyed group experienced feelings of helplessness and fear after a child with Down syndrome is born. Parents often lacked knowledge that a child with Down syndrome was going to be born. Conclusions: A part of the surveyed parents were not prepared that their child was going to be born affected with Down syndrome thus they developed such negative behaviours as depression, divorce, conflicts, and addictions. Half of the surveyed parents admitted that a birth of a child with Down syndrome strengthened their family ties.
