THE GLORY OF THE INCARNATION: THE ICONOGRAPHIC SCHEME OF THE VIRGIN BLACHERNITISSA

Summary/Abstract: Present study is focused on clarifying the origin of the pictorial model of the Virgin Blachernitissa as well as on specifying the details in its onomastics. It considers the main theories about the nature and diversity of the iconographic scheme and clarifies the variety of its names. Emphasis is placed on the presence of the mandorla symbol in the subject, its meaning and variability. Thus, the present study seeks to prove that itis the mandorla that provides the dogmatic and Eucharistic significance of the subject, by visualizing the Glory of the Incarnation on the Blessed Virgin as a “living altar” of God.
