Summary/Abstract: Abstract. The causes of corruption may be found in different spheres of the social system, but in general they lie in the nature and the way the economic and political system functions. The institutions and the mechanism of the property monopoly in the economic sphere, namely representative elite democracy in the political sphere create relationships of power which enable certain social groups to control social processes; these groups use this to get richer and to strengthen their positions by misusing their positions. Corruption is especially manifested in societies that are undergoing a privatisation process which enables the concentration of economic power in the hands of few members of the society. The process is performed in conditions of firm links between the economic and political centres of power. The political cause of corruption should be found in the following cases. when there is a connection between the political elite and the stakeholders of economic power by financing political parties; co-ownership of members of the political elite over private capital; the participation of the political elite in the management of private companies (using companies for granting favours while in power). The efficient systematic framework for the prevention of corruption requires an equal as possible division of powers between the social groups, the existence of the institutions of the representative democracy and the alternative civil society which would not be elitist and whose sources and manners of management would be transparent.
