Summary/Abstract: This research work is devoted to the analysis of the available awareness level of specialists about the formation and development of social work in Russia and abroad. The acuteness of the research theme is determined by the active development of social education in the framework of being extensively reformed Russian higher vocational education as well as the changes in social practice caused by the serious reflection of social work issues and the specifics of the use of traditional and innovative technologies in the social sphere by current and future social workers. Successful training, retraining and advanced training of specialists in the field of social work directly depends on the high level of their awareness about the formation of social work in the world, acquired theoretical knowledge, practice-oriented skills, experience, general cultural and professional competencies, positive motivational and value attitude to their chosen profession. Awareness and ability to realize their social and educational opportunities in the interaction with other people constitute social and pedagogical competence necessary for the future social worker. Our interest to this topic is dictated by the fact that the history of the formation and development of social work in Russia and abroad can provide answers to many questions stated at contemporary system of social education. To obtain the results of the study the authors used the method of questionnaire on the stated theme and the respondents were students and future Bachelors enrolled in the program 040400.62 ‘Social Work’ at Yelets State University named after I.А. Bunin alongside with workers of social sphere practicing in various state agencies. The outcome of the work is demonstrated in determining certain levels of awareness on the formation and development of social work in Russia and abroad and presentation of the guidelines for awareness improvement by the students and social workers.
