Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the basic principles of the politeness phenomenon and examines the different politeness structures most commonly employed in the specific field of diplomatic correspondence in English, more precisely in diplomatic notes. The study uses as a framework the taxonomy of politeness structures proposed by House and Kasper (1961). It attempts to calculate the frequency of occurrence of the structures in diplomatic notes in English and aims to show the interdependence between the choice of appropriate politeness structures and the process of carrying out successful written communication between diplomats.
