Character and structure of traditional Arabic names

Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the structure and characteristic features of traditional Arabicnames. It offers a thorough analysis of their main elements (ism, kunya, nasab, nisba,laqab, and shuhra), and it provides many examples pointing out their literal meanings.Attention is also paid to the importance of traditional Arabic names for the disciplineof Islamic genealogy. There is a special focus on the manners of the harmonizationof these names with Western standards as well as a short commentary about how thedifferent ways of transcription of personal names may lead to serious misunderstandingson the practical level.
