Summary/Abstract: Jaroslav Štichauer: DERIVATIVE MORPHOLOGY IN SYNCHRONY AND DIACHRONY: FRENCH DEVERBATIVE NOUNS WITH -MENT The paper, based on some key concepts of the Optimality theory (OT), is an attempt to provide an explanation pattern for the development of deverbative nouns suffixed with -ment in French from the 16th century onwards. Basic constraints like phonostylistic aspects, syllabic size of the base, homonymy, suffixal "solidarity", blocking, etc. are tested on language material from both dictionaries and literary texts. An in-depth analysis of the re-ranking of constraints between the 16th century and modern French will be the goal of follow-up research.
