Summary/Abstract: At the end of the last World War, the political, military, economic and ideological confrontation arose between the groups of states with opposite interests, evolving in the sphere of influence of the superpowers during the balance of world powers in the bipolarity period between the US and USSR. Southern Europe had a particular importance for NATO, which resulted in its mission, consisting of ensuring the collective defence of member states in the area, protecting maritime communication routes, vital for Western Europe and barring the Soviet expansion into North Africa and the Middle East.
