Energy diplomacy – theoretical framework and practical applications

Summary/Abstract: In response to the increased use of energy resources in pursuing foreign policy interests by many countries, the notion of energy diplomacy has become the object of significant interest to academics, policy-makers and general public. Nowadays, mostly in press and media, the label of ”energy diplomacy” is used to determine various phenomena related to energy policy and activities of companies in the energy sector. This article provides a systematic conceptualization and theoretical framework to study energy diplomacy. Through examining geopolitical conditions in the energy sector, this paper identifies the constituting elements of energy diplomacy which results in a comprehensive definition of the concept. The aim of this study is to show that energy diplomacy is not only a way to achieve energy policy goals but it also constitutes an important tool of state’s foreign policy in the contemporary world in which the separation of economy and international politics is hardly possible.
