Research Directions of Jerzy Giedroyc’s Legacy – Interdisciplinary Perspective

Summary/Abstract: The autumn of 2020 will mark twenty years since Jerzy Giedroyc died and the publication of „Kultura”, of which he was the founder and sole editor, ceased. The books published in the anniversary year reaffirm scholarly intuitions about the need to open new research perspectives on the Editor’s legacy. The analysis of the archives in Maisons-Laffitte and the state of research indicate that the hitherto dominant research directions are being exhausted. The pragmatics of public discourse, for example, demonstrates a departure from the political concepts developed by „Kultura” publicists. The article aims to indicate potential interdisciplinary directions of research into Giedroyc’s legacy in such disciplines as, among others: political and administrative sciences, economics, literary studies, social communication and media sciences, cultural and religious sciences. Specific problems relating to the deficit of research on the reception of writing and the editorial management of circles, networks and relationships can be identified. The Editor’s correspondence groups may be useful in this research. So far, the following have been hidden in research niches: the emigration chronicles, the national programme of „Kultura” (especially the impact on underground journalism), and egodocuments (the personal archives of Giedroyc, Leopold Unger and Teresa Torańska). The assumptions about the social impact of „Kultura” and the publications of Instytut Literacki, the qualitative forms of publicists’ comments, the place of „Kultura” in the media system, etc., financing and distribution can be verified. The parameters concerning the political and literary nature of „Kultura” are difficult to resolve.
