Summary/Abstract: This text offers a general theoretical overview of the signs and symbolic meaning of material in the context of human objects. Material as a starting point in the production of decorative and applied arts, folk art or artistic crafts is a basic prerequisite for their functions and purpose. The text discusses the importance of basic materials, used to make objects, such as clay (earth); stone (including gemstones and semi-precious stones); metal (copper, bronze, iron, silver, gold); bone, leather, fur, wool and wood (various types). Emphasis is placed on their physical qualities and the symbolism to which they refer. There have been beliefs all over the world since ancient times that these qualities are tied to the function of the work, and thus passed on to the person who uses it. The symbolism of the material mainly has apotropaic functions, but it could also influence in the direction of certain religious, spiritual, emotional, transcendental and other searches.
