Summary/Abstract: This article offers an initial reading of Henryk Grynberg’s hitherto unexplored Pamiętnik(Diary). The author attempts to outline the framework of the four-volume text byemploying both a genological reflection and a reading inspired by literary anthropology, including genetic criticism. He considers the significance of the title, reconstructs itsmulti-layered content, and analyzes the functions the diary serves. The article focusesparticularly on describing two attitudes of the diarist – testimony and confession –striving to demonstrate that Grynberg’s Pamiętnik is part of the tradition of Jewishliterature, especially that of the Second World War.
