Summary/Abstract: On March 6, Merilin Aruvee, a PhD student at Tallinn University's Institute of Humanities, defended her doctoral thesis "Text-centered subject and language teaching: theoretical framework and practical recommendations". Supervisors were TLÜ emeritus professor Krista Kerge and TLÜ associate professor Helin Puksand, opponents UT associate professor Kristiina Praakli and TLÜ associate professor Anne Uusen. The language is taught at school on several levels: subject knowledge is mediated through texts, communication is practiced with various text actions, Estonian language classes deal with word and sentence level in depth and writing skills are developed. Estonian language lessons should also ensure deeper language awareness. Language awareness is one of the goals of the Estonian language syllabuses, while related communication competence is the general goal of the curricula. So far, it is not known exactly how communication competence is taught in subject teaching or how the roles of different subjects are distributed in it. However, this is important information for mother tongue teaching, where an attempt has been made to implement a text-centered approach. This, in turn, requires a strong integration with subject teaching, because the texts vary from subject to subject.
