Summary/Abstract: The current situation at global level, the clear evolution towards a multipolar international system, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, China’s assertiveness and aggressiveness in international relations, the alarming increase of autocratic forms of state governance imply a readjustment of the EU policies, strategies, and methods to counter these developments and meet the political and strategic objectives assumed as such. The implications of this readjustment for the EU are directly linked to the policies that are being built and to the instruments used in their implementation. This paper sets out these EU’s response instruments to the new challenges and the efforts of the European leaders to promote a wide range of diplomatic, political, economic, or military measures necessary to achieve strategic objectives. “A Strategic Compass for Security and Defence”, adopted by the EU in March 2022, represents, through the proposed and assumed measures, a framework for action and an instrument for implementing the new strategic vision of the Union in the field of defence and security. To deepen this new vision, through a bibliographic study, the present article aims to highlight the four pillars that comprise the measures provided for in the Strategic Compass, the implementation of the assumed objectives and the projection of the impact of these measures on European policy in relation to the new challenges to defence and security. The general objective pursued is to present the EU’s capacity to adapt to the new security challenges and changes taking place on the international level by implementing such types of policies in order to achieve the assumed strategic objectives. The expected result is the positioning of the Strategic Compass as an important element in demonstrating the EU’s capacity to adapt to new changes by implementing the assumed objectives in the field of defence and security.
