Summary/Abstract: The very evolution of sovereignty is largely historically determined. Dependent states, empires, trusteeships and communities are now historical relics. In the current world system, however, the triumph of sovereignty has led to a mismatch between the power capabilities of states and existing international principles and norms. Decolonization gave Third World countries a level of sovereignty (both de facto and de jure) that they could not achieve or defend based on their own power capabilities.
