Summary/Abstract: Manija was originally the two-part name of an island. According to records, its first component was an adapted form of the personal name Magnus. Supposing the name is older than the records can prove, its origin may lie in a Man(i)-initial, probably Germanic personal name that comes from Scandinavia (Gotland). The second component of the name was -oja (> oy, definite form oya) ’island’, which by today has been shortened into -ja.
