Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to provide an analytical perspective on the evolutionary history of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople as well as its religious role in maintaining Christian Orthodox homogeneity in the Balkans. It also captures the way in which the religious institution becomes a subject of dispute between Greece and the future Republic of Turkey, and how this antagonistic conflict will ultimately leave its mark on its future functionality.
