Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to illustrate how the systematization projects promoted by the communist regime in Romania caused the destruction of cities, the forced remodelling of administrative centres and their transformation into symbols of socialist thought and politics, which also happened in Alba Iulia in 1969-1987. During these years, the 1 Mai Square (today: Iuliu Maniu Square) was radically modified preserving only one representative building: Gizella Palace. Further, the demolition of or dramatic changes to old houses near Iuliu Maniu Square in 2019-2020 for the construction of a block of flats also motivated this study which is intended to send a signal to protect and promote the heritage that still exists in the old centre of the city of Alba Iulia.
