Summary/Abstract: The 19th century abounds in reform projects, which cover, to a greater or lesser extent, all aspects of Romanian society. The boyar origin of the first Romanian reformism directed the interest of its initiators towards the area of politics, international relations, power relations, either internally or externally. Simeon Marcovici considered himself a vector of European culture and values, which he effectively circulated in the Principalities. Eufrosin Poteca interpreted the European model, which he unequivocally approved, in a personal religious key, difficult to accept, especially by the clergy. The stake of the immense effort of social pedagogy, which the first Romanian teachers – schooled abroad – imagined, was a new identity construction, which brought to the fore the European character of the Romanian space. The option in favor of European (Western) modernity was accompanied by the reaffirmation of cultural and religious belonging to Orthodoxy, one that was in opposition to the oriental character of the Ottoman Empire.
