Summary/Abstract: In this article, starting from several arguments in favour of categorising Panait Istrati’s work as an autobiography and demonstrating all along why this writer not mentioned by the main histories of Romanian literature falls under the realistic genre, such classification being made for the first time in his case, as the Dictionary of Romanian writers by Zaciu, Papahagi and Sasu does not assign him to a literary trend either, we briefly analyse the way in which one can perceive in the Istratian work the author’s double cultural identity (French and Balkanic Greek-Romanian, consolidated by his coming from the, Romanian Balkans, another new concept created by us).
