Summary/Abstract: George Bacovia is the poet who, ever since he was a child, fought illness and the pains it caused. The sickly environment is forever there in his life and work. Illness represents the way towards literary creation, but also towards healing. The universe of the Bacovian lyricism becomes a real hospital setting. A few of the illnesses Bacovia has faced are neurosis, insomnias and eczema, the latter being responsible for the destruction of his soul, along with his face. Tuberculosis becomes a significant theme of his poetry. The physical degradation caused by its disastrous effects is frequently outlined in his work as well. The illness becomes a propeller of poetic creation. Arlette Bouloumié concludes that „On the other hand, writing contributed to the fight against suffering, whose representation interacts with the illness itselfˮ. To what extent did illness lead to the poet’s being born is the question that we are trying to answer in a conclusive way. The pain becomes a mediator between the genius and the creation. Healing comes via the art of beauty. It is only by writing that the artist can survive.
