Summary/Abstract: Compiling of Polish derivational nests dictionaries has already been finished. It has lasted for the last 30 years and it is no wonder that the lexical material in the dictionaries is becoming outdated. Some may ask if the whole effort is going to be wasted. Certainly not, provided that what the dictionaries offer is used skillfully. The author of the dissertation maintains that the dictionaries can be used for studies on the history of the lexicon. She warns against transferring the methodology of derivational nests elaborated in the so-called synchronic word-formation to diachrony. According to the author, the amount of effort would be out of proportion to the results. However, it would be rewarding to carry out research on: 1) organizing new derivational nests on the basis of borrowing; 2) the symptoms of derivational nests expiring; 3) regrouping within a derivational nest, together with segmenting their primary unity; 4) regrouping within a semantic category (the size and the kinds of nests in regard to the semantic similarity indicate a hypernym in a semantic field). The author illustrates each of the proposals with an example.
