Summary/Abstract: The novella Lenz by Georg Büchner deals with the life of Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, a friend of Goethe and is based on the documentary evidence of Jean Frédéric Oberlin's diary. Although left unfinished at the time of Büchner's death in 1837, it has been seen as a precursor to literary modernism and its influence on later writers has been immense. The main character suffers from mental disorder and his rendering of the reality he is experiencing, is depicted in a very close bond to the environment he is living in, nature itself vibrates to the Lenz’s suffering.
