Summary/Abstract: A dominant source of Chinese identity is statehood, bureaucracy, and the corresponding organization. During their long history, certain organizational forms and attitudes are preserved to such an extent that they almost evoke a sense of permanence and immutability. This article examines the informal segment of the organizational process, the role of origin and cohabitation, and the system of guanxi. It finds that the modernizing tradition, which is also linked to “Western” norms, is complex, and substantially defines today’s life and the operation of the present Chinese state.
