Summary/Abstract: The authors recall the beginnings and the development of modern diachronic linguistics in Europe (especially in Germany) and Poland as well as the reaction on it which was Saussure’s structuralism. His presentation of the relation between the synchrony and the diachrony, illustrated by the famous comparison of language to the play of chess is a subject of polemics. In a language it is the diachrony which evidently determinates the synchrony. In author’s opinion this dependence is the best guarantee of need and diachronic movement’s justness in Polish studies linguistics.
