Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the representation and methodological and didactic purpose of visual representations of Croatian cultural heritage in history textbooks for high school first and second grades after changing the subject curriculum in 2019. As the subject of analysis, we used textbooks from four publishing houses that the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia approved. Through quantitative analysis, we first determined the number and frequency of visual representations of heritage topics according to the defined heritage categories of the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia. Quantitative analysis of the textbooks shows the representation of heritage topics with numerical deviations between individual publishing houses and variations in presentation between historical periods. We also included a qualitative analysis of the methodological and didactic instruments accompanying the textbooks' heritage presentations. We questioned their purpose with accompanying questions and tasks, i.e., whether they develop students' historical thinking, critical approach, and heritage valorization. Finally, we determined similarities and differences between classes and publishers by comparing the results. Based on the obtained results, we hold that new generations of textbooks should include visual representations of heritage categories that are represented to a lesser extent or are entirely omitted. Also, textbooks should contain better didactic apparatus to encourage the valorization of heritage and critical thinking rather than reproductive knowledge.
