Summary/Abstract: The contemporary school provides numerous challenges to teachers. Rapid development of digital technologies, tools and applications is increasingly capturing the attention of students, and it is constantly challenging for teachers to motivate students to study and work and keep their concentration on the task. One of many possibilities to gain the students’ attention and simplify the process of achieving the educational outcomes is the introduction of play into the teaching process. Play is a primary way of learning about oneself, others and the environment, it's universal; it is fun and close to children's nature. It's instinctive and an important part in the process of growing up and forming personality. The concept of applying game in the teaching process has attracted a great attention of both teachers and researchers, primarily because of its influence on students’ motivation and engagement. The basic characteristic of teaching through play is that during the teaching process, the student simultaneously acquires knowledge, skills and habits, without even being aware of it. This work presents the results of a survey conducted among 102 elementary school teachers of the Sarajevo Canton, as well as the results of interviews with 110 students aged from I to IV grades of primary schools. The research results provide an insight into the attitudes of teachers about efficiency of the play during the lessons. This work also presents the teachers’ opinions about effectivness of the game applied in different parts of the lesson as well as the types of games that teachers most often use in the teaching process. There are also the results of interviews conducted among students, their thoughts and opinions about the play during the lessons. Based on the research results, we can conclude that play is a important stimulus for learning and developing specific competencies and that students are rather happy to participate in this type of lessons.
