Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on developments over the last decade within the Visegrad Group and Visegrad 4–Ukrainian relations, V4 vulnerabilities and the lack of solidarity which is challenging the identity of the group. The author argues that recent developments in the region contain both risks and a window of opportunity for the Visegrad Group. It may either transform itself into a core group for the wider block of countries or become marginalized within the EU. If the V4 countries succeed in overcoming the internal contradictions then there will be potential for the group to become a self-sufficient CSDP shaping body. The author emphasizes that in any case the idea of an alliance stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea has been mooted and whatever its format the Visegrad countries and Ukraine are most likely to be part of such an alliance.
