LEXICALIZATION IN OLD LITERARY ROMANIAN OF SOME ELEMENTS OF LATIN ORIGIN: FORMS AND SENSES INTERPRETED DIFFERENTLY FROM THE CURRENT ONES

Summary/Abstract: The research carried out in this study focused on a small number of very old terms in Romanian, being selected according to their Latin etymology. They were mainly taken from the Ithica ieropolitica manuscript (the Slavonic translation of the archimandrite Vartolomei Măzăreanu, in 1764), but we also researched some editions or works of history of the language in which the authors record the presence of the same words. To establish a precise etymology, we consulted the Romanian Language Dictionary (DLR), the Small Academic Dictionary (MDA) and other specialized dictionaries. The proposed analysis refers only to those terms of Latin origin or based on Latin derivation that have different forms and meanings than those encountered in the contemporary period of literary Romanian. The selected elements highlighted occurrences, especially of common names, followed by the frequency of transitive, intransitive, reflexive verbs, of first and fourth conjugation, the list being completed only to a small extent by adjectives, too. Some of these lexemes with outdated forms have various semantic notes, some of them are preserved to this day in popular speech or are regional variants.
