Summary/Abstract: Thinking about the evaluation of conceptual means in science leads to the need to describe the medium level aim of science which is more specific than global aims but is more general than individual goals in concrete problem-solving contexts. In this paper it is argued that at this level of generality a search for significant regularities is an important goal in the scientific enterprise. The term "regularity" is used in the broad sense (as a "pattern") which corresponds to the pluralist notion of scientific law: regularities are of varying character including universal laws, local generalizations, and approximations, etc. As for the significance of regularities, its evaluation is crucially dependent on specific relevant background knowledge.
