Summary/Abstract: More than a decade in the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv professionals work extremely active not only for preservation, digitization and study of its rich collection of sound recordings on wax cylinders, but also for its distribution and popularization among wide audience. Thus in a series of exhibitions, publications and CDs the music of the world is shown since the dawn of the sound carriers – wax cylinders. As a result of a series of projects started from the 1990s, as well as financial support from various institutions in Germany, this great collection of the old and rare recordings of traditional music begins its new life. It should be noted that few of them are music from Europe because of the largest interest mainly to Asia, Africa and South America. The seventh disc made in Berlin is Walzenaufnahmen aus Südosteuropa. / Wax Cylinder Recordings from Southeast Europe. G. Küppers-Sonnenberg 1935-1939. This is the first disc in the series of the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv with historical recordings from Europe. It is accompanied by a detailed analytical presentation of the collection and selected samples. The team that worked to create it consists of specialists from the archive – Lars-Christian Koch, Susanne Ziegler, Albrecht Wiedmann, but also from their colleagues who are experts in the study of different local traditions in Southeastern Europe. The article presents recordings from this CD edition as a colorful music picture that represents the priorities and the spirit of the time when the recordings were made: changes in political and economic situation in Europe, modernization and its impact on music, changes in urban culture and the role of tourism.
