Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence is an important societal problem because it carries significant social and individual costs, yet it is relatively absent in sociology. Drawing on the review of leading sociological journals from the last decade and the programmes of Polish Sociological Congresses from 2013 to 2022, in this essay, the authors argue that domestic violence is practically absent in contemporary Polish-language sociology. Through the lens of feminist sociological imagination, the authors suggest three thought-provoking hypotheses as to why this might be the case: (1) democratization of Poland since 1989, (2) the influence of the Polish Catholic Church, and (3) a particular approach of sociologists to family studies. The authors conclude that the lack of sociological discourse on violence may contribute to keeping domestic violence a taboo topic.
