Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the problem of the imbalance of men and women in the top management in Russian universities. In the course of a study conducted in 2017-2022, the authors analyzed data on 374 rectors of state universities and various aspects of their activities. The professional distribution of women within the education system forms a pyramid: they make up the majority - 82 % in it, but their share decreases with each level of position, decreasing to 11 % among the rectors of the best universities in Russia. According to the results of the study, it was found that women rectors have worse scientometric and administrative indicators, lower efficiency as heads of universities. In the authors’ opinion, this does not mean that women are less competent both in their scholarly and administrative capacities. The system of selecting personnel for top positions in the field of education is rather non-transparent. Thus, a significant role belongs to curators’ vision concerning the place and role of women in the modern elite when appointing rectors. As a result, men retain the leading role in the sphere of top-management in the higher education system.
