Summary/Abstract: The Small Square appeared in the 13th century as a result of building the second line of fortification of Sibiu. Even at its early beginning The Small Square was an important trade centre of the settlement. Most of the houses built here were quilt houses, which kept their purpose for a long time. The house from no. 24 makes no exception. The archaeological diggings under the entrance arches confirmed this. The oldest archaeological discoveries here are traces of wood, belonging to a previous building or an early wooden phase of the house. Under the entrance arches there was also discovered the old entrance to the cellar of the house which confirms the interest in trade of the medieval owners of the house. Such entrances made from the street to the cellar were specific to the houses where the cellar was a storage place and where an easy access was necessary. The archaeological inventory is neither vast nor spectacular. It consists mainly in ceramics, but also in bone or metal items. The most interesting piece is the iron head of a hoe, discovered at the base of one of the pillars of the arches. The older of these items are from the 13th Century.
