Summary/Abstract: Contemporary humanities, succumbing to fashions, sometimes forget about their past achievements. In Polish historiography, the author seeks reflection on visuality as a subject of research, as a form of presenting the past, as a means of documentation and, lastly, as an epistemological issue, bringing up the sensual nature of historical cognition in Lelewel. It is precisely in Lelewel’s works that he still finds references to earlier traditions. Following the works of Mieczysław Porębski, he describes numerous strands of Polish thought devoted to reflection on the significance of images for historiography, from visual arts to photography to film, tracking the manner of thinking about the past which we now call visual, in historians’ and sometimes artists’ writings.
