Summary/Abstract: The text sets out to examine the way the tzar/ the king is represented in Bulgarian folklore. It comes out that in genres directly deriving from the ancient myth, the invariant original image of the king has been preserved in a comparatively intelligible/comprehensible manner. The genres that are considered to be more directly related to history than to myth have not have not kept the memory of any real Bulgarian king. The conclusion is that Bulgarian folklore inherits oldest features of the primal idea of power. On the contrary, historical memories embedded in it are too pale and unreliable.
