Summary/Abstract: Unwritten languages are particularly at risk of extinction, especially because of the negative perception that some communities have of their own languages. Formal education is one of the main solutions to this threat. However, the outcome of such a teaching program remains largely dependent on the speakers' representations of their languages. This study focuses on the situation of Ivorian languages. It explores the representations, opinions and attitudes that young people in Côte d'Ivoire develop with regard to national languages. It is based on data from a survey of high school students. The results show that the representation of national languages as languages of local cultures and traditions is the most widely shared among the high school students interviewed. It also appears that these young people have opinions and attitudes that are rather favorable to the teaching and promotion of national languages.
