Summary/Abstract: As education developed, so did the number of those who could read and write. Of the total number of literates, attested in Wallachia, most were laypeople, fact which reveals the tendency to laicize the written culture. Statistics showed that the main place among document writers was still occupied by professionals from royal or boyar chancelleries. However, starting with the second half of the 17th century, there was a significant increase in private writers, coming from free peasants, small boyars, merchants, craftsmen, soldiers.
