Summary/Abstract: In the context of Polish literary studies research on rhetoric, methalepsis is the least acknowledged among the most significant rhetorical devices subordinated to metonymy due to its poetical functions. The trope has recently become a part of the methodological analysis in the wake of the discussions on Gérard Genette’s narrative theories well-founded in the experiments performed in postmodern prose. This paper is meant to complement the existing recapitulation of French statements in the debate on metalepsis with the concepts developed and debated on by American circles. This philosophical and poetical polemic on the interrelations of rhetoric, poetics, and epistemology carried out in the 1970s by Paul de Man, who followed the rhetoric of Nietzsche, had a major impact on Harold Bloom’s approach to modern poetry which he reflected in his literary criticism theory "The Anxiety of Influence".
