Summary/Abstract: For the future role of the European Union in the post-Soviet territories four things are of crucial importance. It should not apply double standards when it recognizes the independence of new states. Its self-confidence needs to be more productive, and it should make better use of the strategic potential of soft power. Last but not least, it needs the new foreign and security policy mechanisms that are provided for in the Treaty of Lisbon.
