Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on an analysis of animations that appear in Gustaw Morcinek’s novel "Pokład Joanny" [Joanna’s Coal Seam]. In order to explain their high frequency in the text, the author tries to find associations between animations and the representations of inanimate nature presented in the novel, pointing out that because of them the abiotic environment becomes visible to the reader and is able to reclaim its agency. Furthermore, the article discusses the similarity of animations to latent metonymy (in the concept of Eelco Runia) and the way of investigating animations that resembles the process of revealing the mining underground and which takes into account their frequency of occurrence, group nature, and the images of living creatures these animations create. The author examines several groups of animations that range from the names of coal seams to the metaphors of methane, water and fire.
