Summary/Abstract: This text is about a literary concept used by writers ever since the beginning of literature: melancholy. The article shows the impact of melancholy in an old text from Romanian literature. This text puts emphasis on the way on which the ancient man has a somber vision of the world, and the central motif is fortuna labilis ( changing fate). During his life on earth, man has an unhappy destiny with a lot of suffering and his only hope is good will, which can offer him spiritual salvation.
