Summary/Abstract: The celebration of the Iasi University centenary was a very special event for the academic community from Iasi. Its organization started even since 1955, when leading members of the University mentioned the necessity of organizing festivities with the occasion of a siècle since the first Romanian university was built. In spite of the initial lack of financial support, the leaders of the University initiated many projects focused on the renovation of the University building, supplying the laboratories with new techniques and on the other hand publishing some articles to honor the event. Thanks to the rector’s efforts and with the help of the communist leaders in autumn 1960, Iasi University was having a “new look”, being ready for the celebration. There were 37 foreign Universities participating at the festivities from 24 countries and also members of the P.M.R. (Romanian Labor Party), ministers and people representing the most important cultural and superior teaching institutions from Romania. While this event was seen by the communist leaders as an opportunity to celebrate the triumph of their political plan of creating this “new school” for the professors from the University this was a moment of “reunification of their family”, which was created around Iasi University and a moment to create new academic links with foreign professors that visited Iasi with this occasion.
