Summary/Abstract: This article presents a theoretical overview of some of the most important psychological aspects of religious doubts. Uncertainties about religious teachings and beliefs, or questioning them, seem to be frequent characteristics of adolescent and adult religiosity. First, the article explores psychoanalytic and cognitive views on the origins of religious doubts, and discusses how faith development theories understand the emergence of doubts. Next, the possible relationship between religious doubts and attitudes towards religion is explored, along with the connections between religious doubts and mental health. A better understanding of the nature of religious doubts may be helpful for the practice of pastoral and psychological counselling.
