Summary/Abstract: The article deals with aspects that could contribute to making it easier for people after serving an unconditional prison sentence to integrate into everyday life and thus have the opportunity to participate in the work process. At a time when there is a shortage of labour on the labour market, especially in the industrial sector, a solution is offered in the form of a higher involvement in the given work area of a person released from serving a sentence of unconditional imprisonment. This would offer a solution to the situation for employers, but also for persons who have served their sentence and are trying to reintegrate into society. Also, the issue of employment of persons released from serving a sentence entails problems. Few companies are willing to employ people serving a sentence. Nevertheless, a solution is offered, by connecting the social and economic aspects. If the system were set up efficiently, there would be significant savings in the area of public finances, especially in the area of unemployment. The issue in the article is not considered only in the environment of the Czech Republic, but deals with approaches in EU countries. The article includes a comprehensive overview of the modern concept of contemporary European prisons, including its financial aspects in individual countries, the calculation of mutual relations between imprisonment and re-offending, and a comparison of different approaches to prisons, the costs and successes of rehabilitation programs.
