Summary/Abstract: he article addresses the interaction between autonomy, identity, and intimacy in relation to the emancipation of persons with functional diversity. Personal assistance and sexual assistance are highlighted as essential material supports for the independent life of people with functional diversity, while emphasizing the key roles of culture, art, and the media in the construction of a collective imagination that should be realistic, diverse, and inclusive. Further, a concept of intimacy is proposed, where assistance is based on an anti-ableist bioethics (free abortion and euthanasia are defended against eugenic abortion and selective euthanasia currently in force), as well as on a radical conception of freedom of choice and of empathy and the abolition of the institutionalization of people with functional diversity. The text plays on drawing parallels between its key concepts (autonomy, identity, intimacy) and the characters of The Wizard of Oz (The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Lion), as well as between Dorothy’s desire to return home and the will for empowerment of people with functional diversity.
