Summary/Abstract: The hazelnut (lat. Corylus avellana) is a dendromorphic symbol that can be analyzed in the light of sacred and profane binary. The hazelnut is the shrub that inserts a multitude of basic functions - apotropaic, curative, of initiation, of conscious mediation between microcosm and macrocosm, of prediction, magical, ritualistic, utilitarian. The interdisciplinary perspective (ethnology, folklore, linguistics, magic, mythology, religion), the synchronic analysis, the association with rites of passage (traditional wedding, funeral), the correlation with holidays (Probejenie-Folk Calendar / The Transfiguration-Christian Calendar), with emblematic personalities who suffered the martyrdom (Saint Peter, Saint Elijah), the connection with certain folk categories (folk songs, enchantments, legends) emphasizes the complexity of the theme.
